About the Founder

   caroline

My name is Caroline Rebecca Settles. Born to southern parents, I was exposed to what was termed “traditional protocol behaviors” expected of a young lady.  However in the changing times my upbringing was quickly becoming passé if not altogether rejected, by what are deemed as modern or new age social behaviors. Though these behaviors are also often called “politically correct” it does nothing to promote true confidence, productive social behaviors or sincere courtesy. Well, one night while hanging out with my sister. I was planning one of my young daughters’ social events. These were little social events that I would plan since she was two years old for her little friends as opposed to the oh, so popular “playdate”; fun activities that include adventures to learn about other cultures.  My sister and  cousin began to tease me that I was a “southern belle” mom. I refused the notion, because I viewed myself as more of a “Modern Socialite”. After all, I was born in the suburbs of Detroit – I’m just a proper city girl. To prove the point my sister was inclined to research the characteristics of a true “Southern Belle”. And much to my chagrin, there it was staring me in the face.  So much of a Southern Belle was I, that I would give Scarlett a case of the vapors.

For a short time after I pondered the teasing and within I jokingly thought; besides needing a good, charming Beau of like estate what’s wrong with being a Belle – but heck, are there any Beaus left? That’s when it dawned on me “Are there any Beaus left”?  Not the fake persona found in characters like “Beau Devoreau” from the 70’s sitcom “Welcome Back Carter” (wow, didn’t I just date myself!). But, rather that person of quality, balance, character, honor, who has a great regard for tradition. A person of true well breeding, ( which is not always based on financial background or a family name).

This is where my passion to begin a program like (Belles) Bells and Beaus was born. A new twist on the play date and the playful target of a joke, ignited me to create a program that is more than affordable for parents, fun, adventurous for kids, that can be carried throughout their lives. And, that wouldn’t in any way exclude anyone because of economics or demographics.
